Michael Lewis New 2019 Treasurer
The South Elkhorn Cabinet voted in February to name Michael Lewis the new 2019 treasurer. Michael is 22 years old and brings far more than youthful energy to this opportunity to serve. He has a wealth of experience, skill, and a deep spirituality rooted in a long legacy of faith provided by his family.
A little about Michael from Michael:
I was born and raised in Louisville where I grew up as a member of Middletown Christian Church, the church where my grandfather, Jim Baughman, was the senior minister for about 23 years. My mother and extended family have served as Elders at Middletown Christian since their 30s and I grew up leading worship for the youth group as a student. As a youth, I had an entrepreneurial spark and started multiple small businesses in high school.
I decided to go to UK to study Finance and Accounting. My Freshman year I started a company called FinanceU: a crowdfunding site for students to raise money for college. Though I failed miserably, Ialso learned a ton and started a new company called FA Guide: a matching platform that cultivated business between Financial Advisers and financial wholesalers. I was fortunate enough to sell FA Guide to a large Financial Advisor news organization called AdvisorHub out of Washington D.C. in January 2017.
After selling FA Guide my Junior year of college, I received a job offer from a Lexington-based startup called Fooji. I dropped most of my classes and for the past 2 years served as the Head of Finance for Fooji, Inc. where I helped the company raise $4.2m and go from a $3m valuation to a $15.1m valuation. A few months ago I accepted a new job at a firm called Venture First where I serve as the CFO for a variety of venture-backed, high-growth companies around the nation. For 2 years I took classes in the morning and night and just graduated UK in December of 2018!
I started coming to South Elkhorn my freshman year of college and quickly fell in love with the people and the culture. Over the past 4.5 years I helped run sound on Sunday mornings, lead music in worship from time to time, served on the stewardship team last year, preached a sermon in church on generosity, attended Finance Team meetings and leaned into the lives of our youth every Sunday evening as a youth group leader. I have created some awesome relationships through this church and can’t wait to continue serving.
My interest in the Treasurer position is found at the intersection of my finance/accounting skillset, my entrepreneurial spirit, my love for the people and values of this church, and my care for South Elkhorn’s long term sustainability and growth. I look forward to the educational, spiritual and relational growth this opportunity to serve promises.
